Cybercriminal offers illicit data requests from major platforms, risking user privacy.

In a concerning development in the cybersecurity world, a hacker has claimed to have obtained access to a law enforcement tool that could be used to request user information from major online platforms such as Discord, Binance, and Coinbase. The hacker is allegedly selling this access on an underground forum, posing significant risks to user privacy and security.

Access to Law Enforcement Tools

The account in question, known as "KodexGlobal," is purportedly a law enforcement request account. Such accounts are typically used by authorities to issue subpoenas or emergency data requests to gather information during investigations. The hacker has advertised the sale of this account for $5,000, or alternatively, is offering to issue an emergency data request for $300 each.

Implications for User Privacy

The unauthorized access to such a tool is alarming as it could enable the hacker, or anyone purchasing the service, to illicitly obtain personal information from users of platforms like LinkedIn, Discord, Tinder, Binance, Coinbase, and Chainlink. This information could then be used for identity theft, financial fraud, or other malicious activities, putting countless users at risk.

Source of the Breach

According to Hudson Rock, a cybersecurity firm, it is believed that the hacker gained access to the KodexGlobal account through credentials obtained from Infostealer Infections. These infections often result from compromised law enforcement computers, indicating a serious breach in security protocols within law enforcement agencies.

Response from Affected Companies

Binance, one of the potentially affected platforms, has responded to the incident, stating that they are aware of the situation and are investigating. They have reassured users that their data remains secure despite the claims. However, the full extent of the breach and the potential impact on users are still under investigation.

Protecting Data

Users of the affected platforms are advised to monitor their accounts for any unusual activity and to enable two-factor authentication for an added layer of security. It is also recommended to be vigilant about sharing personal information online and to be aware of potential phishing attempts that may arise from such data breaches.
