In recent developments, the popular Ethereum blockchain explorer, Etherscan, has become the focal point of a significant security concern within the cryptocurrency community. A series of phishing advertisements discovered on the platform have raised alarms, highlighting the ongoing threat of cyber scams aimed at unsuspecting crypto investors. These malicious ads, designed to mimic legitimate services, have been identified as potential gateways for scammers to access and drain users' cryptocurrency wallets.
The phishing ads in question were specifically designed to lure Etherscan users into engaging with them, under the guise of promoting a Multichain Yield Optimizer. Once clicked, these ads would redirect users to phishing sites, where scammers could potentially gain unauthorized access to personal information and digital assets. One of the ads was linked to around 23 phishing websites, showcasing the scale and sophistication of this scam operation. The threat posed by these ads is not only to the security of users' assets but also to their privacy, as scammers seek to exploit MetaMask wallet signatures and other sensitive data.
This incident is not an isolated one; rather, it is part of a larger phishing campaign suspected to be run by the cyber phishing organization known as Angel Drainer. The campaign has reportedly spread beyond Etherscan, affecting search engines and social media platforms as well. The lack of oversight from ad aggregators has been identified as a contributing factor, allowing these malicious ads to slip through the cracks and reach a wide audience. In 2023 alone, crypto phishing scams have already resulted in nearly $300 million stolen from over 324,000 victims, underscoring the severity and prevalence of this issue.
Despite the alarming nature of these phishing ads, Etherscan has yet to issue an official response. However, the platform has previously taken steps to combat illicit activities, including blacklisting Ethereum addresses linked to illegal activities.
