Solving Blockchain’s Ecological Problem: What Works and What’s at Stake

Solving Blockchain’s Ecological Problem: What Works and What’s at Stake

MediumMedium11 Jun 2021 | 07:54 am
A single transaction over the Bitcoin blockchain consumes as much energy as 680,000 Visa transactions. The majority of mining is done by just a few companies, mostly operating in China. PoW consensus takes the problem of decentralization and shifts it off the blockchain, but doesn’t fully solve it.

Polkadot aims to solve the interoperability and scalability problems that other blockchains still have to cope with. The relay chain is responsible for the network’s security, consensus, and cross-chain interoperability. Polkadot can also interact with blockchains that use their own finalization process through something called bridge parachains.

MediumMedium12 May 2021 | 15:16 pm
Loom Network is planning to integrate Polkadot with its Basechain network to provide a smart-contract platform and token bridges for the entire blockchain ecosystem. The multi-chain interconnections provided by Basechain will be a boon for DeFi dapps, regardless of which network they’re deployed on, because they'll be able to utilize liquidity across Ether, Binance Smart Chain, and other major blockchains.

KuCoin will support the Loom Network (LOOM) BEP20 and new LOOM ERC20 tokens. To ensure a smooth migration to the new Loom token, KuCoin will close the LOOM deposit and withdrawal services temporarily at 08:00:00 on April 23, 2021. We strongly suggest you deposit your OLD LOOM tokens into KuCoin as we will swap the token for you automatically.

LOOM tokens can now be staked via Binance Smart Chain (BSC). BSC has much lower transaction fees than Ethereum. You can deposit LOOM BEP20 from BSC to Basechain for staking. Any LOOM you deposit to BSC can be withdrawn to either ERC20 or BSC.

Crypto-lending is a new way for investors to earn interest on their crypto holdings. With interest rates close to zero, money deposited into traditional savings accounts lose value relative to inflation. In 2021, you can take out a loan against your crypto holdings at 5.5% APY using MakerDAO in less than five minutes. These loans are fully collateralized using crypto assets.

LOOM is now officially live on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) as a BEP20 token. BSC is the first step in our plan to increase the liquidity, utility, and usability of the LOOM token. Next week we’ll be rolling out a Basechain upgrade to support transfers of LOOM between BSC and BSP.

Loom Network has completed another funding round with private investors. The new capital will allow them to commit more resources to building out their blockchain tech. They’ve also started expanding their marketing and community management team. We’ll be re-opening our community Telegram group and shifting any general chit chat about the project from the developers group.
Loom Network Roadmap 2021+

Loom Network Roadmap 2021+

MediumMedium28 Feb 2021 | 09:05 am
Loom Network was the first to implement a sidechain to Ethereum (now known as Basechain) and launched a working transfer gateway that allowed anyone to transfer tokens between our sidechains and Ethereum. Loom is working on the next major version of the Loom protocol that will power Basechain going forward, creating a solid foundation for a more interconnected platform. The LOOM token swap plays an important part in rolling out these upgrades.

Loomx has deployed the new LOOM token contract to Ethereum Mainnet. The new token contract has a 1 billion token supply and retains the same LOOM symbol as the old token contract. We’ve also deployed the token swap contract that will handle the exchange of old LOOM tokens for new ones, at a 1:1 exchange rate. If you’re using a hardware wallet (e.g. Trezor, Ledger) you will need to confirm the transaction on your device.

The LOOM token swap is scheduled to go live on February 1st, 2021. The swap is 1:1, so whatever amount of LOOM tokens you hold you’ll get exactly the same amount of new LOOM after the swap. If you have LOOM in your own hardware wallet, then you will need to swap the tokens yourself when the swap goes live.

The zkLoom token swap is expected to take place on February 1st, 2021. The existing LOOM token contract is not upgradable, so we are unable to implement the features necessary for the token to operate with the new zkRollup based architecture we’re building. We’ll be coordinating the token swap with the exchanges LOOM is currently listed on to make the process as painless as possible.

Loom Network is developing a new Loom protocol based on zkRollup. The zkLoom protocol is designed to reduce the environmental impact of our blockchains, while at the same time improving both the performance and security of Loom. Upgrading Basechain to the new protocol will require multiple steps, including deploying a new LOOM token contract to the mainnet.

The global size of the healthcare market was worth over $8.45 trillion in 2018 and continues to grow with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Cointelegraph. "The medical device financing and leasing market segment for patients and professionals alone is well over $450 billion per year," the report said. "There is no centralized finance solution that is easy, accessible and global," it added.

Zero knowledge proofs (ZkSNARKs) will allow us to upgrade our Transfer Gateway to be completely trustless, while retaining a fairly simple user experience. The ZK Rollup based Transfer Gateway will allow users to initiate withdrawals directly through the ETH and ERC20 contracts on Basechain. Users will have to pay a fee in ETH in addition to the gas fee in order to maintain a sufficient balance of ETH and LOOM tokens.

Loom Network is introducing a variety of usage-based fees to ensure that Basechain becomes self-sustaining. The fees will be payable by dapp developers rather than end-users, and those fees will then be paid out to validators to cover their running costs. Developers will need to deposit LOOM tokens on Basechain to cover the cost of transactions sent by users of their dapps.

Loom Network’s mainnet, Basechain, went live in December 2018, and since then, we’ve upgraded the protocol numerous times in order to fix bugs and add many new features. Some core dependencies of the Loom protocol couldn’t be upgraded without incurring a significant amount of downtime, because backwards compatibility was not as high of a priority for the authors of those dependencies as it was for us.
